EXQUISITE CORPSE

Double Lucky

A poem, an unsystematic story, a piece of erratic art – all products of an exquisite corpse. A game played with two or more people, and using either lines or words, an exquisite corpse manifests as a fusion of minds. In my experience, the game is played with a piece of paper, folded as many times as the players see fit. One player draws an image on the first side of the folded paper – with lines from the image spilling onto the next panel. The second player, who is not privy to viewing the first players work, uses the lines to create their own image, continuing bits onto the third panel. This process repeats for as many times as the paper has been folded.

In 2012 I spent a semester of University abroad in Perth, Australia. One of my favourite courses I attended focused on Journaling (namely, sketchbooks). Exquisite corpse was one of the two projects completed in class. Unfortunately, as I was returning to Canada, my partner and I split up the finished product, and for some reason I did not take a picture before the scissors (okay, my hand) cut it apart. However, the creative process that was involved I treasure, and hope to revisit with a partner in the future. I hope the images inspire you to try the game yourself! These are a few of the panels I had completed.
